Livestock biosecurity involves much more than routine disinfection. For Dox-al ITALIA SPA, the exclusive distributor of Halamid® in Italy, it means taking a structured approach to prevention across the entire farm. In a June 2026 interview with Axcentive, Dr. Marco Ghilardi explained how Halamid® fits into this approach and why biosecurity should be viewed as an investment in animal health and farm resilience
Dox-al: a science-led approach to animal health and nutrition
Dox-al is an Italian company specialising in the production of veterinary pharmaceuticals and complementary feeds. Its work in animal nutrition combines a scientifically driven approach with research, innovation and the development of proprietary and patented technologies. Alongside these activities, the company distributes Halamid® for hygiene and biosecurity applications in livestock farming in Italy.
How Halamid® supports farm hygiene and disinfection
According to Dr. Ghilardi, Dox-al’s main applications for Halamid® include disinfecting livestock equipment and farming facilities, as well as incorporating it into broader biosecurity programmes. These uses aim to maintain high hygiene standards and reduce the risk of pathogen spread within animal production environments.
He identifies broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, low corrosiveness and ease of use as the product’s main advantages. In his view, these characteristics are particularly relevant to routine livestock disinfection, where pathogen control needs to be combined with compatibility with equipment, surfaces and farm facilities.
A structured biosecurity plan for livestock farms
Dr. Ghilardi describes biosecurity as a priority that every farm and production facility should address methodically. He highlights the role of a HACCP-based biosecurity plan in identifying critical control points, establishing appropriate hygiene and disinfection procedures, and helping minimise the risk of pathogen introduction and spread. Within this framework, he sees Halamid® as one tool in a comprehensive prevention programme, rather than a substitute for the wider management measures involved.
Beyond disinfection: biosecurity as a long-term investment
Looking ahead, Dr. Ghilardi expects biosecurity to play an increasingly strategic role in animal production. His vision extends beyond disinfection to encompass prevention, hygiene, cleaning protocols, control of people and vehicle movements, equipment management, monitoring of critical points and appropriate staff training.
He explains that helping prevent the introduction and circulation of pathogens can support animal health and welfare, reduce disease pressure and limit the need for therapeutic interventions. From this perspective, a structured preventive approach is an investment in productivity, more efficient and sustainable livestock production, and resilience against future health challenges.
Dox-al at EuroTier 2026
In the June 2026 interview, Dox-al announced plans to attend EuroTier 2026 in Hannover, Germany, at its booth in hall 23.
